2020 Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS AN ACHIEVEMENT GAP?

‘Achievement Gap’ is the disparity on a number of educational measures between the academic performance of groups of students, defined by gender, race and/or ethnicity, disability, language and socioeconomic status.

WHAT’S THE SITUATION IN BERKELEY?

Berkeley has one of the highest achievement gaps along race lines in California. This doesn’t mean that our public schools are of poor quality, rather that opportunities for excellence are available to some, but not others.

Research shows that good health and academic success are interdependent. In Berkeley, data shows a strong connection between low test scores and poor health indicators like low birth weight, asthma, crime and premature death rates –- and fall largely along race/ethnic lines.

The stark reality in Berkeley: Our low-achieving students are predominantly African-American and Latino. These children and their families also show the highest indicators of poor health and well-being.
